PYGMY GOAT from Africa - 'Minkie'

molly&merlin

The West African Pygmy is a miniature dairy goat with milk production being quite generous for their small size. This goat is one of the few breeds of goat that will breed out of season. Therefore, they will often produce more than one kid crop per year. Although domestic goats in general originated in Asia, the African Pygmy is one of four types of dwarf goats from Africa.

The African Pygmy is a true miniature because its body conformation is so similar to that of the larger dairy breeds. They stand between 15 and 20 inches tall at the shoulder, and some are almost as wide as they are tall - indeed our two look very pregnant most of the time - even Merlin! Males are usually taller than females. They come in a variety of colours, ranging from brown, black, white, red or golden, often in combination with random white markings.

Their hair is short and fine during the summer, but they can adapt to colder climates by producing a thick, woolly undercoat. They are hardy goats, thriving as well in heat and humidity as extreme coldBecause of their small size, these goats are economically raised and easy to care for. Their docile temperament and fun loving actions make them a perfect family pet. The African Pygmy exists in small numbers worldwide.  Minky Moo and Merlin were introduced to the Centre in 2003, and enjoy life amongst the great mix of animals and visitors we have here.  They too will love a scratch and cuddle from time to time!

We have seen these goats throughout Africa, where they are kept roaming the village dust tracks, houses and yards, in search of food, which may well consist of cardboard boxes, as well as waste food. Although they are not kept for milk production in the UK, in Africa both meat and milk is the reason for their presence.

They are very mischievous little goats, great fun and easy to keep, but they do require good quality mixed food and dry conditions. Sometimes they are quite difficult to find in the UK, and can fetch a very high price - the African friends we have would be amazed that their little goats can fetch up to £200! A lifetime of wealth in Africa!

Sadly little Minkie's friend, Merlin, died in 2016, but Minkie has made great friends with the other donkeys and shetlands, and also Juta, our small Appaloosa mare!
